SIX STRATEGIES TO HELP YOU
BECOME
A MORE EFFECTIVE MANAGER • BE RESPONSIBLE. Managers lead by example. If you want honest, hard working, loyal employees you must be honest, hard working and loyal. Employees will pay attention to your behavior first, your words second. • TAKE TIME TO TRAIN. Employees like to know what is expected of them. They want to do a good job. For that to happen they must have tools necessary to succeed. Employers often devote more time and resources to maintaining equipment than they do maintaining personnel. View your employees as an investment not an expense. Find out what they need to succeed and provide it . • TRAIN EARLY AND OFTEN. Smart employers are keenly aware that learning never stops. For employees to be effective, they must have the knowledge necessary to do their job. Training may be necessary in areas ranging from customer relations to time management to improving oneself in various areas requiring licensure or certification. For this to happen a corporate culture must be created that values this use of time. • GIVE ONLY AS MUCH RESPONSIBILITY AS YOUR EMPLOYEE CAN HANDLE. Many a promising work relationship has soured because an employee was given too much responsibility without being properly trained. To avoid this trap employers and employees must keep lines of communication open to insure that the responsibility given is the responsibility that can be assumed. • ONCE RESPONSIBILITY HAS BEEN GIVEN, DON’T TAKE IT BACK. Few actions are as confusing and demoralizing as responsibility that is given and then taken away without warning. Once you have made a decision to give responsibility, you have crossed a line of trust. If you are not comfortable that an employee can do a job, you are better off waiting until you are sure they can handle the task. • BE WILLING TO LET EMPLOYEES LEARN FROM THEIR MISTAKES. Part of good managing is being available when an employee has a problem. This does not mean solving the problem for the person or dumping the problem on some unsuspecting co-worker. Answering questions or offering encouragement are appropriate ways of assisting and empowering others. Assisting them in avoiding their responsibilities or bailing them out will not give the employee a chance to learn. The bottom line: Effective employees do not appear by accident. They are created and nurtured thorough a combination of continuous communication and education, and mutual trust and respect. |
